A soft red glow glittered as it caught the sunlight. Swirls of every shade of the colour whirled inside the orb, lighter where the sun's summer light rested on it. The colours were delicate, the soft reds blending neatly with the bolder colours in the entrancing orb of red which would look so ordinary from a distance. Fingers touched it as the girl nervously fingered her forehead as she flowed hurriedly to the Laboratory. Her pointed mint green ears flicked back, her long, similarly coloured tail flicking to and fro. Where it split off into two, the tips remained still. The Espeon Pokémorph was pale, a scared look about her. Well, who wouldn't be nervous about entering a place you were scared of, recieving your first Pokémon, then starting a new life?
This was Sulteron, and presently her sandle-held paw like feet led her up to the front door of the Laboratory. She tried to take her mind off her fear, instead thinking about which Pokémon will be there, and which she would choose. Perhaps there would be one of her favourites there, or a shiny? She wondered on this, still nervous, as she reached out to tap on the door. She then noticed that there was a sheet of paper pinned to the door, pictures of Pokémon available as starters drawn on it.
She studied the paper, running a hand down the list. Wow, this choice would be extremely difficult. There were so many of which she would want for her own, that it would be impossible to just pick one, even though she knew she had to. She liked at least half the Pokémon there; Ralts, Abra, Chikorita, Houndour, Sneasel, Mudkip, Phanpy, Larvitar, Scyther... the list went on. Her finger tapped the various pictures, and eventually she came to a descision of her options. She would pick one out of Charmander, Cyndaquil, Dratini, Eevee and Riolu. She would make her final choice by looking at each Pokémon's personality, ensuring that the Pokémon she picked would be loyal, strong, and so on. The Pokémon she didn't choose, she supposed she would be able to find in the wild or so on some day.
It was then, now she had come to a conclusion as to which Pokémon she would walk away from here with, that Sulteron the Espeon Pokémorph and soon-to-be trainer, reached out with her hand and rapped sharply upon the the door. The door that would take her to all sorts of places. The door which would start her new life, her life as a Pokémon trainer. The girl took a deep breath, waiting for Professor Crow's response.

The building was silent. Not a mouse seemed to stir, and certainly not a professor. Perhaps he was still asleep, or perhaps he was gone. Whatever the case, no one answered the door, and it sat there, unopened for a good many minutes. The morning was dragging on, and pokemon and people were beginning to get moving in the city of Origo. The port city wsas just a road's walk away from the Research Facility where the girl pokemorph now stood. While many travelers were put off by the constant crowd of the city, with the merchants, tourists, and sailors who occupied it regularly, the Research Facility stood almost on an imaginary island. Few people other than trainers traveled out to it.
A high-pitched whistle sounded from inside the building, a peculiar one. It sounded like the scream of a teapot when the tea was done and ready to be drunk. It started off faint, faraway, but quickly grew and grew into a wail or screech. Something odd was going on inside the lab, that was certain! It continued growing louder and shriller every couple of moments, until finally, it sounded impossible for it to get any louder or more high-pitched.
Bam!
The door's hinges cracked, and a dent in the thing looked as if a pokemon had rammed it. The lab was quiet again for a moment, save for the schreik of whatever was making the whistle, until another bang in the door snapped it from its hinges and sent it toppling to the ground, a crumpled mess. Sprawled out on the door was a man, no older than 30, with blue-ish black hair (which looked shaggy and unkempt and covered in some kind of mess from a machine.) and his dirty labcoat seemed in rags.
The man let out a cough, and scratched the side of his head. He was mumbling something to himself about 'modifications' but it became hard to make out. He seemed oblivious to the new trainer until he looked up, and his eyes grew wide.
"Oh!" the man gasped, jumping to his feet, "Did you see that? The explosion? Ha! This place is great! So many gadjets and gizmos to play with!" He stopped for a moment and looked down at the door he was now standing on.
"I guess I'm going to need a new door, though," he laughed, then motioned into the building, "but, please, come in! Explosions don't happen that often around here. Trust me,"
He held out his hand, suddenly, as if to shake, "I'm Professor Crow, by the way."

Sulteron raised an eyebrow in confusion at the strange teapot-like whistling scream. What a strange sound! She wondered what it was, but assumed it was some sort of special science experiment that she should probably not be sticking her little nose into. Besides, the Professor would probably pour some strange substance on her or something terrifying like that.
Bam!
The sound of the explostion made Sulteron jump. She gasped in shock, eyes widening in horror as the door was forced right off it's hinges. Oh, goodness! Some kind of crazy evil science experiment had gone horribly wrong, and the person being experimented on had died or done something strange! She squeezed her eyes shut, hardly daring to open them.
Then she heard who must have been Professor Crow speak. "Oh! Did you see that? The explosion? Ha! This place is great! So many gadjets and gizmos to play with!" the man exclaimed. She opened one eye nervously. There was a cheery looking man, dirty and scruffy from the explosion, but otherwise fine, standing on the remains of the door. She raised an eyebrow.
When the man was done speaking, Sulteron hesitated before cautiosly shaking his outstretched hand. "A-are you sure you're all right? No broken arms or anything? Not even a bruise?" she wondered, amazed that he was all right. She entered the building anyway, gazing around her, tail swaying quickly.
Hm... now would probably be a good time to change the subject. "I saw the options, and I'm not sure which Pokémon I'd like. Could I please see any Cyndaquil, Charmander, Dratini, Eevee and Riolu you have, so I can pick one with a good personality?" she asked.

Professor Crow pulled his hand away after the shake and made his way to a large black desk, puling a heavy drawer out and rummaging through its contents absently. He seemed to only hear half of what Sulteron said to him, and he waved her conerns off, saying that he was more durable than he looked. Behind him sat a smoking machine, part of it charred black. It was was comepletely different from the beautiful chrome machines standing around the large room.
"Aha! Found it!" Crow exclaimed, holding out a piece of paper victoriously. On it was written different numbers and names of all sorts, and at the top was printed in bold letters: Pokemon Stock.
The professor continued to scramble around the room in a disorganized manner, once tripping over the tail of his coat, though his excitement never seemed to wane. He made a B-line for a door off to the right, a small door that seemed most likely to be a closet. Upon opening it, a room filled to the brim with pokeballs greeted him, each ball on a specific place in a specific row on a specific shelf. He began gathering an arm-full of the pokeballs, checking the list every few seconds. While at first his picks seemed to be at random, it could soon be seen that he was gathering them with a distinct purpose. Once he held all five pokeballs, he stepped out of the closet again and let the pokemon escape the divices that held them. One by one they appeared in a glow of bright white.
"These are the pokemon you wanted to see, right?" Professor Crow confirmed, pushing his fingers through his wind-blown hair.
The first one, a blue and tan creature with squinted eyes, stared curiously up at Sulteron, tilting its head to one side and then letting out a sudden sneeze. It shook its head energetically and scampered towards the trainer's feet. It seemed adventurous, yet a bit naive.
The second pokemon let out a great yawn, seemingly oblivious to the trainer in its midst until it opened its eyes wide with fear. The charmander stared at Sulteron nervously and backed away.
The Eevee fluffed its cream-colored neck-fur and wagged its tail pleasently. The fox-like pokemon glanced over the new pokemorph trainer, then decided that it was bored with her already. It curled up and fell asleep at Professor Crow's feet.
The dratini seemed the most aggressive of the five pokemon. It lashed its blue tail furiously and narrowed its eyes to dangerous slits, glaring into Sulteron's face. It let out a low growl-type of sound, which was made humorous by its high-pitched voice, and raised its head threateningly.
Finally, the Riolu noticed Sulteron, but more importantly, it saw the opening of where the door used to stand. it saw the light shining in from outside, and it saw the wonderous blue sky and green grass. It stood amazed at the sounds of bird-pokemon chriping happily in the trees, and wind blowing into the room. For a heartbeat, it stood dumbfounded, but then, shooting a nervous glance at Professor Crow, it made a mad dash for the exit.
"Hey!" Crow called, jumping toward the little thing, barely catching it in his hands. he mumbled exhaustedly under his breath, "Always trying to run off."
The Riolu huffed irately and crossed its arms.

Sulteron watched as the overexcited man hurried about getting the Pokéballs, wondering if he had had an overdose of energy drink or something. Perhaps he'd been eating lots and lots of sugar. Maybe. Maybe this was all a plan and he was fooling her into believing he was harmless before he madly went and attacked her or ripped her to shreds or exploded her or something? The Espeon 'morph kept her distance, just in case anything crazy like this happened to ocur. She saw him collect the five Pokéballs from the large room filled with them, wondering which of the Pokémon inside would be the one she would leave this Laboratory with, leaving her old life behind and starting her new one.
Seeing the Pokémon alone made it much easier to chose. Before she came here, she had spent some time looking at all the different Pokémon in the world, studying their movesets and when they evolved and so on. When she found a Pokémon that looked promising, she had looked further into it. She knew the general way most Pokémon's moves were learnt, and the sort of things they were and whether it was difficult to evolve them.
Firstly, she evaluated the Riolu. Riolu were popular but rare Pokémon, as she had heard. She liked the look of this one, anyway. Their evolution was Lucario, which it evolved into through happiness. They also had very good movesets, which was an added bonus. However, this Riolu seemed as though the moment she set off for the first route, it would run away, never to be seen again. That wouldn't be too good. Riolu was ruled out, then.
Dratini. They took some patience when raising, for the levels of which their attacks were learned were fairly spaced out, and they didn't evolve into Dragonair until level thirty, and not Dragonite until level fifty five. However, they were very cute, and when evolved extremely beautiful, but Sulteron was a trainer, not a Coordinator. Also, Dratini didn't seem very friendly. Not Dratini, then.
Eevee. Adorably cute, and evolved into six different types of Pokémon, Sulteron being part one of them. However, Eevee and it's evolutions didn't have a very good moveset at all, but they were very rare and many people loved them. But this Eevee seemed unimpressed by everything, and rather vain by the way it fluffed up it's mane. Sulteron was starting to become worried that none of the starters would be suitable for her.
Right, Charmander next. Them and their evolutions were reknowned for their bad behavior, but they were rather powerful and knew plenty of good attacks. A popular choice of starter for those of the Kanto region. This one seemed different. Timid, scared of things, and possible a little lazy by the way it yawned. Well, hopefully, Cyndaquil would be right...
Relief flooded Sulteron as she watched the cute little Fire type. Cyndaquil. They evolved easily, at just level fourteen, learned good, strong moves, and this one had a great personality as a bonus. It seemed friendly and daring. At least, it was the only one who had come up to her rather than shied away, bolted for the door or acted hostile or so on. Well, that was settled, then. Sulteron would start her new life with the Fire type, Cyndaquil. She looked up at Professor Crow. "I pick Cyndaquil, please," she announced.

"Are you sure you don't want the Riolu?" Professor Crow mumbled, looking a bit disappointed. Then, he conceded, "No, you've made your choice."
In truth he'd known that the cyndaquil had been the only one of the pokemon that had a good personality for beginning trainers, but could anyone blame him for trying to get rid of one of the less managable ones? The dratini had almost broken his arm the other day! He hoped that he could find places for them eventually, hopefully before they caused him permanent damage.
He returned the pokemon to their balls, a thin red light shooting from each device and engulfing the respective pokemon, and while he placed them back in their places, he felt a bit lighter. It had been a while since he'd last given out a pokemon to a beginning trainer. He'd forgotten the satsifying feeling he felt each time they accepted their partner and walked out the door, heading for their lifelong adventure. Despite the smoke still wsiping out of the machine behind him, and the pain he felt in his temples, he looked down at the curious little cyndaquil, and at the new trainer, and smiled.
"Alright," he said handing over cyndaquil's pokeball, "This is its pokeball, and there should be one of my assistants running around outside somewhere. He'll give you the items you'll need."

Sulteron almost laughed at Professor Crow's disappointed reaction to her choice. The expression on his face stated clearly that, although he knew that Cyndaquil easily had the best personality, he would have prefered Sulteron to have chosen to take one of the other, more troublesome Pokémon off his hands. As much as she would have liked to take along the Riolu at his question, she knew she could only take one Pokémon, of course, and it would be foolish to take a Pokémon which tried to run away at every sight of freedom along with her just because Crow wanted to give it to a new trainer as soon as possible.
She smiled at Crow as she found him pressing a red and white Pokéball into her hand, making her the official owner of Cyndaquil, not that she would use the term 'owner'. More... friend, team leader, or something. She took the information into her head as he said it. A lab assistant, right. Well, if he was running around as Crow claimed he was, he wouldn't be too hard to find. She nodded to Crow. "Thank you so much, I'm sure Cyndaquil and I will go far! And don't worry, I'm sure someone will want a Riolu or Dratini!" she said as she made her way to the door. The handle was pulled down, and the Espeon 'morph left.
She was now standing before the building of the Origo Laboratory, an excited Cyndaquil skipping about her feet. She felt a buzz of excitement herself. This felt almost like a dream. The Cyndaquil, the very one she was watching... this was hers to train and make as strong as possible. Her first Pokémon, at long last. She looked down at Cyndaquil. "I guess we'd better go find this Assistant, and get our items," she told it, walking to a higher point and studying the area for any sign of this man.

Sure enough, a skinny, spectacled fellow with thick black hair appeared from around a corner, his glasses gleaming in the bright sunlight. In his hands he carried a cheap-looking backpack that looked half-filled. He saw Sulteron ahead of him and let out a gasp, dropping the bag at his feet. His face was sweaty and he looked confused and nervous. Could this really be an assistant to Professor Crow?
"Ah-I'm s-sorry ma'am," he stuttered, picking up the pack, "If you're a new trainer..."
He stopped, looking down at the cyndaquil by her feet. He then knew immediately that she was just starting her journey, and in a rush, he shoved the backpack into her hands, muttered a 'good luck' under his breath, and dashed away, back around the corner. He was gone before he could hear anything Sulteron had to say. (Should've done this earlier!) Sulteron watched as the skinny, sweating man made his way towards her. He was the very image of a nerd; perhaps one of Crow's assistants who preferred to work indoors, perhaps? He certainly didn't seem the most fit of people. Perhaps that's why the career he chose didn't require that much energy or strength, but rather extreme brainpower? Whatever the case, after the eccentric, overly-cheerful energetic Professor Crow who had surprised Sulteron, this man seemed shockingly different. Well, he was sort of what Sulteron had thought Crow would be like, but more nervous and less evil.
She smiled and nodded to him as he handed her the backpack. "Thank you, really." she told him, checking to see what goods awaited her inside the material. The unnamed Cyndaquil rested his paws on the rim and looked in, flames flaring up in his excitement. There seemed to be a fair amount of good stuff in here. A map, pokéblock case, Pokéballs, Potions and a Revive. Sulteron noted the Pokédex in there; she was sure to need it more often than any of her other items, so she pocketed it.
Well, that was it. She slung the backpack over her shoulder, Cyndaquil not wanting to walk at the moment and squealing in pleasure as he whooshed through the air, his paws still clinging to it. He pocked his cute face and thin eyes through his trainer's hair, grinning as the two new partners set off for Route One, their first challenge together.
